Ganesha is one of the best-known and beloved representations of divinity in Hinduism. He is easily recognizable, for he has the head of an elephant. Ganesha represents beginnings, obstacles, patron of arts and sciences, and the god of intellect and wisdom. He is honoured with affection at the start of any ritual or ceremony and invoked as the "Patron of Letters" at the beginning of any writing.
Ganesha may have been born with a human head and body but was beheaded by Shiva during a battle that arose when Ganesha came between Shiva and Parvati, and that Shiva then replaced Ganesha's original head with that of an elephant
The number of Ganesha's arms varies; his best-known forms have between two and sixteen arms. Many depictions of Ganesha feature four arms.
He is controls and influences both physical and spiritual obstacles. He can place obstacles in the path of those who need to be checked, and can remove blockages just as easily. Both functions are vital to his character.
Ganesha is considered to be the Lord of Intelligence. This association with wisdom also appears in the name Buddah. So, at some level there is connection to the Buddah energies. Ganesha is identified with the Hindu mantra AUM, and suggests that he is the personification of the primal sound Ganesha is associated with the first or "root" chakra
